Bahrain's 1965 coinage series — including this piece — was the emirate's first independent issue, replacing the Gulf Rupee that had been administered through the Reserve Bank of India. The Gulf Rupee's sudden demonetization in 1966 gave these coins immediate practical urgency; they weren't ceremonial, they were necessary infrastructure for a currency system Bahrain was building from scratch.
