| Description du revers | The reverse displays a radiant sunburst design composed of alternating plain and wavy rays emanating from a central medallion, representing the spirit of the 14 July 1958 republican revolution. Within the central medallion, the coat of arms of the Republic of Iraq features a wheat ear set against a map-like outline, encircled by a beaded border and the Arabic legend 'الجمهورية العراقية' (Republic of Iraq) at the top. The commemorative date '١٤ تموز ١٩٥٨' (14 July 1958) is inscribed at the base of the central medallion, marking the founding of the republic. The sunburst rays extend to the scalloped edge of the coin, filling the entire field with bold radiating lines. 1959 was the first full year of the Iraqi Republic following the July 1958 coup that ended the Hashemite monarchy. Abd al-Karim Qasim's new government moved quickly to redesign the coinage, replacing royal imagery with republican symbols — this issue was among the first series struck under the new regime. The transition was abrupt enough that some 1959-dated coins were actually produced at the Birmingham Mint under contract, as Iraq's own minting infrastructure could not immediately absorb the full requirement.
