Kiangnan's provincial mint at Shanghai was among the most prolific in late Qing China, yet the smaller denominations it produced in silver — including this 5 fen — saw limited practical use in a monetary economy still dominated by the tael and the larger dragon dollars. The "uncircled dragon" variety designation under Y#141a distinguishes it from otherwise near-identical dies, a detail that matters considerably to specialists building complete provincial sets.
The Kiangnan mint was established with foreign machinery in 1897, making these among its earliest silver outputs.
