The Northwest Branch of the Chinese Soviet Republic Government Bank operated out of the Shaanxi-Gansu border region during the Long March period, issuing small-denomination notes to keep local soviet economies functioning under conditions of near-constant Nationalist military pressure. Five fen represented genuinely useful purchasing power at the village level — this was not a prestige denomination.
Paper quality and printing resources in the border soviets were extremely limited, and notes from this branch show considerable variation in ink consistency and registration across surviving examples. The 1935 date places this squarely in the period before the Red Army consolidated at Yan'an.
