The Northwest Branch of the Chinese Soviet Republic National Bank operated out of the Shaanxi-Gansu border region, one of several quasi-autonomous soviet areas the Chinese Communist Party maintained during the Jiangxi period. These fractional notes — fractions of a yuan at that — were a practical necessity in rural economies where copper coinage was scarce or hoarded, and where the CCP needed to demonstrate functional administrative control through a credible local currency.
Survival rate is low. These notes circulated in poor, agriculturally dependent communities under active Nationalist military pressure. Paper degraded quickly in field conditions, and the currency was rendered void after the Long March disrupted the soviet zone structure from 1934 onward.
