| Obverse description | The obverse features a highly stylised, abstract rosette or mandala-like design created by artist Navid Nuur, composed of radiating fan-shaped petal elements arranged in overlapping concentric circles, producing a layered optical effect with a small irregular void at the centre. The intricate geometric relief fills the entire inner field of the coin. The legend WILLEM-ALEXANDER reads vertically along the left rim, while KONING DER NEDERLANDEN curves along the lower rim. The date 2018 appears at the top of the rim. A small heraldic lion mintmark is visible at the lower left, between the central design and the rim inscription. |

Issued to mark Leeuwarden's tenure as a European Capital of Culture in 2018, a designation the city shared with Valletta, Malta. The Dutch five-euro coin has occupied an awkward commercial space since its introduction — legal tender, but priced above face value at issue, ensuring most examples go straight into collectors' hands and never approach a cash register.
