Obverse description Stylised, minimalist right-facing effigy of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, rendered in clean incised lines against a mirror-polished field. The portrait occupies the central field with a modern, graphic aesthetic characteristic of contemporary Dutch coinage. The circular legend reads 'WILLEM-ALEXANDER - KONING DER NEDERLANDEN' around the upper periphery, with the date '2017' positioned along the lower border, both separated by dashes.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 70th anniversary of Johan Cruijff's birth, this coin appeared roughly a year after his death from lung cancer in March 2016. The Royal Dutch Mint produced it in two versions distinguished by colorization — this white and red variant references Ajax and the Dutch national team colors most associated with his career. Cruijff had a complicated relationship with official Dutch commemoration late in his life, having famously declined an appointment to the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1999, citing his distrust of institutional honors.
