| Obverse description | Stylised, minimalist right-facing effigy of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, rendered in clean incised lines against a mirror-polished field. The portrait occupies the central field with a modern, graphic aesthetic characteristic of contemporary Dutch coinage. The circular legend reads 'WILLEM-ALEXANDER - KONING DER NEDERLANDEN' around the upper periphery, with the date '2017' positioned along the lower border, both separated by dashes. |

Issued to mark the 70th anniversary of Johan Cruijff's birth, this coin appeared roughly a year after his death from lung cancer in March 2016. The Royal Dutch Mint produced it in two versions distinguished by colorization — this white and red variant references Ajax and the Dutch national team colors most associated with his career. Cruijff had a complicated relationship with official Dutch commemoration late in his life, having famously declined an appointment to the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1999, citing his distrust of institutional honors.
