Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands in May 1945, this coin appeared during a year when commemorative ceremonies across the country were cancelled or severely curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dutch liberation is observed with particular solemnity — the country endured the Hongerwinter of 1944–45, in which an estimated 18,000 to 22,000 civilians died of starvation in German-occupied western provinces during the final months of the war.
