De Nederlandsche Bank was founded in 1814 by royal decree of Willem I, who needed a stabilizing monetary institution after the financial chaos left by Napoleonic occupation and the dissolution of the Batavian Republic. The bank held a monopoly on banknote issuance from the outset, a privilege that shaped Dutch monetary policy for the next two centuries. This commemorative was issued under Willem-Alexander, a neat dynastic symmetry given the founding monarch shared his name.
The 2014 five-euro silver issues were legal tender but primarily sold through collector channels at a premium, meaning virtually none entered circulation.
