Obverse description The obverse presents a sculptural plaster model relief of the painting 'Winter' by Latvian landscape painter Vilhelms Purvītis, rendered with multiple degrees of frosting to simulate depth and texture. The denomination legend '5 EURO' and the artist's name 'VILHELMS PURVĪTIS' are arranged in a semi-circular arc along the upper periphery of the field. The issue year '2022' appears as part of the obverse inscription. The overall design employs a proof finish with selectively graduated frosting to distinguish compositional planes of the original artwork.

Additional information

Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945) was the dominant figure in Latvian landscape painting and the founding director of the Art Academy of Latvia, established in 1919 following independence from Russia. His reputation rested almost entirely on winter scenes rendered with an almost clinical sensitivity to light — work that earned him a grand prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He died in exile in Bonn, having fled the Soviet re-occupation of 1944.
