Tsitsánis composed "Synnefiasmeni Kyriaki" in 1943, during the Axis occupation of Thessaloniki, reportedly writing it in a wine shop on Aristotelous Square while the city starved. The song was suppressed under the subsequent military junta decades later — banned alongside dozens of rebetiko works deemed subversive. Greece issued this coin on the centenary of his birth, a belated institutional embrace of a genre the Greek state had long treated with suspicion.
