5 Euros Theophilos

Theophilos Hatzimihail (c. 1870–1934) spent most of his life in poverty on Lesbos, painting tavern walls, shop fronts, and café ceilings in exchange for food and lodging. He died largely unrecognized. It was Stratis Eleftheriadis — the Paris-based art dealer known as Tériade — who posthumously brought Theophilos to international attention, eventually donating a significant collection to establish the Theophilos Museum in Vareia. The coin's 2020 issue falls within Greece's ongoing commemorative program honoring figures from the visual arts.
