St. Olaf's Castle in Savonlinna was built by the Swedish crown beginning in the 1470s under Erik Axelsson Tott, intended to anchor Swedish control over the eastern frontier against Novgorod. The fortress changed hands repeatedly during the long sequence of Russo-Swedish wars and was held by Russian forces for extended periods before Finland's incorporation into the Russian Empire in 1809 — after which it lost all military relevance and fell into ruin. Restoration work beginning in the late 19th century saved the structure.
Finland's €5 commemorative program has consistently used bimetallic construction to distinguish these issues from circulation coinage, though they carry legal tender status.
