Belgium's long tradition of honoring its comic strip heritage in coin form — the so-called "Ninth Art" series — produced this issue celebrating Spirou and Fantasio, characters created by Rob-Vel in 1938 for the inaugural issue of the Spirou magazine. The colored variant, distinguished from KM#442 by its applied surface color, commands a modest premium over the uncolored version despite identical mintage parameters.
Spirou predates Tintin's magazine rival by several years and outlasted most of its contemporaries, remaining in continuous publication — a run now exceeding 85 years.
