Ståhlberg served as Finland's first president from 1919 to 1925, his tenure defined largely by the immense task of building a constitutional framework for a country that had only declared independence in December 1917 and endured a brutal civil war months later. A trained jurist, he personally drafted much of the 1919 Constitution of Finland, which remained the country's foundational law for over eighty years until its replacement in 2000.
He survived a kidnapping attempt in 1930 when Lapua Movement activists abducted him and his wife and drove them toward the Soviet border.
