| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta centrally positioned in the field, depicting two armoured knights as supporters flanking a quartered shield, surmounted by a mural crown. A rope-style inner border frames the design. The legend CENTRAL BANK OF MALTA curves along the upper periphery, flanked on each side by a Maltese cross. The motto FIDUCIA FORTIS and the founding year 1968 appear on a scroll at the base of the arms. The denomination 5 EURO is inscribed along the lower margin in raised letters. |

| Additional information |
Issued to mark the papal visit to Malta in April 2022 — the first papal visit to the island since John Paul II came twice, in 1990 and 2001 — this coin arrives somewhat belatedly as a commemorative, with the 2025 date reflecting production rather than the occasion itself. Malta's Catholic identity runs deep enough that the Central Bank has issued papal commemoratives with unusual consistency relative to the country's size.
