Gaston Lagaffe — the catastrophically lazy, accident-prone office clerk created by André Franquin in 1957 — became the subject of a Belgian legal curiosity in 2017 when his publisher Dupuis retained enough rights to authorize this issue despite decades of dispute over the character's ownership following Franquin's death in 1997. Belgium has a long history of commemorating its Franco-Belgian comics heritage in coin form, but Gaston is a pointed choice: a character defined entirely by his refusal to do any work, immortalized on a coin produced by a government mint.
