San Marino's wildlife series has leaned heavily on raptors in recent years, and the peregrine falcon is an apt subject: the species was functionally extirpated from much of Western Europe by the 1960s due to DDT-induced eggshell thinning, then staged one of the more dramatic recoveries in conservation history after organochlorine pesticides were restricted under the 1979 EC directive. San Marino, landlocked within Italy, sits within the falcon's current breeding range across the Apennines.
