João II earned the epithet "O Justo" — The Just — though his reign was defined as much by calculated ruthlessness as by justice. He personally oversaw the execution of Fernão II, Duke of Braganza in 1483 and is widely believed to have ordered the assassination of his own brother-in-law, the Duke of Viseu, the following year, consolidating royal authority by dismantling the over-powerful Portuguese nobility. This coin belongs to INCM's Numismatic Treasures series, which revisited key figures from Portuguese history in collector-grade base metal issues rather than the precious metal formats typically reserved for such subjects.
