Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, inspired by the medieval heraldic design associated with King João II, occupies the central field, displaying the traditional quinas (five escutcheons charged with bezants) arranged in a cross pattern, surmounted by a crown. The engraver's name appears incuse in the left field. The circular legend around the periphery reads the date and denomination at the top and the issuing authority along the sides and base, all separated by decorative stops. The overall design is rendered in a bold, archaic relief evoking the coinage style of the late fifteenth century.
