Part of Austria's long-running "Land of Water" environmental series, this 2013 copper issue was produced as a collector piece rather than a circulation coin — Austria had by then fully adopted the euro and had no practical use for a five-euro denomination in everyday commerce. The series was conceived to highlight Alpine water ecosystems at a moment when EU water framework directives were pushing member states to formalize watershed protection policies.
