| Description de l’avers | The obverse depicts a highly detailed knight's shield rendered in high relief at the center of the field, bearing the Maltese coat of arms supported by two armored knights and surmounted by a crest, with a prominent eight-pointed Maltese star overlaid upon the shield's surface. Flanking the central shield in the background are the partially visible forms of two armored knights in full plate armor, their gauntleted hands gripping lances, rendered in dramatic sculptural relief. The riveted rim of the shield and the finely textured chainmail in the lower field add depth and artistic complexity to the design. The legend MALTA appears in raised letters at the upper periphery, flanked by decorative dots, while the date 2021 is positioned at the bottom, also flanked by dots. Malta's "Knights of the Past" issue belongs to a collector series revisiting the island's time under the Order of St. John, which held Malta from 1530 until Napoleon's largely bloodless seizure in 1798. The Order transformed the island from a near-depopulated strategic outpost into a fortified city-state, funding construction that still defines Valletta's skyline. That 268-year tenure left an administrative and architectural imprint deeper than almost any comparably brief European occupation.
The Central Bank issued this in .999 fine silver — fractionally purer than the more common .925 standard — a specification increasingly favored for Maltese collector issues from this period.
