Obverse description The obverse features the papal coat of arms of Pope John Paul II, depicted as two impaled shields beneath the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The dexter shield bears the heraldic charges of the Wojtyła family arms, while the sinister shield displays a black cross with the letter M (for Mary) on a white field, a personal addition by John Paul II. The legend IOANNES PAULUS II P.M. arcs along the left rim, with the regnal year AN. XXVI and date MMIV inscribed vertically along the right field. The design is rendered in high relief with a finely mirrored proof field.
