Obverse description Stylised effigy of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg in right-facing profile, rendered in a geometric, faceted artistic style within a circular inner border occupying the right half of the field. A vertical line divides the field, with the country name LËTZEBUERG inscribed vertically to the left of the effigy alongside the date 2014. The design, by engraver Yvette Gastauer, employs bold angular planes to convey the portrait in a distinctly modern idiom.

Additional information

Luxembourg issued this piece to mark the centenary of the country's steel industry, which by the mid-twentieth century accounted for over 80% of national export revenue. The ARBED group, formed in 1911, made Luxembourg one of the largest steel producers per capita in the world — a position that collapsed almost entirely when the global steel crisis of the 1970s and 1980s forced mass layoffs and plant closures across the Minett region in the country's south.

The choice of stainless steel as the striking material is a deliberate reference to the subject matter rather than a cost decision.
