Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a highly detailed, full-colour reproduction of the famous Gdańsk Astronomical Clock, a monumental late-medieval timepiece housed in St. Mary's Basilica in Gdańsk, Poland. The composition faithfully depicts the clock's multiple concentric rings, the outermost of which is rendered in black with Roman numeral hour markers and white stars set against the dark ground. Within this border, twelve sculpted polychrome figures representing the signs of the zodiac are arranged in a ring, each depicted in three-dimensional relief with applied colour. A central deep-blue astrolabe disc is adorned with gilded stars and a large gold-and-brown lunar phase disc, with clock hands radiating from the centre and a gilded sun indicator visible at the lower right. The innermost field features a celestial scene with a reclining allegorical figure amid golden stars, conveying the astronomical and calendrical complexity of this 15th-century masterwork.

Aanvullende informatie

The Gdańsk Astronomical Clock, housed in St. Mary's Basilica, was constructed between 1463 and 1470 by Hans Düringer. It remained the tallest astronomical clock in the world for nearly a century. Its inclusion on a Maltese commemorative issue reflects Malta's ongoing series celebrating European cultural heritage rather than any direct historical connection between the island and the Hanseatic city.
