| Beschrijving keerzijde | A dignified bust of Pope Benedict XV in left profile is depicted in the inner silver-toned field, shown with hands clasped in prayer and wearing pontifical vestments. His facsimile signature and the dates 1914–1922 appear below the portrait, referencing his pontificate. The outer bronzital ring bears the legend CITTA' DEL VATICANO and CINQUE EURO arcing across the upper portion, with the mint mark R visible in the field. The lower arc of the ring carries the inscription LA GUERRA, UN'INUTILE STRAGE, quoting Benedict XV's famous condemnation of the First World War. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Benedict XV reigned during World War I and spent much of his pontificate attempting to broker a negotiated peace — efforts systematically ignored by all belligerents, who privately called him "the Pope of the Boches" depending on which side was complaining. His 1917 peace note to the warring powers was rejected outright. He died in January 1922, largely unrecognized in his own time for diplomatic efforts that historians have since rehabilitated considerably.
The Franciscus designation reflects Pope Francis's ongoing commemorative series revisiting his papal predecessors. Benedict XV was canonically beatified — he has not been.
