Obverse lettering FRANCISCVS PP. • ANNO X • MMXXII • IHS MISERANDO ATQUE ELIGENDO L. PANCOTTO AM.INC.
Reverse description The reverse presents a stylised allegorical composition referencing the Canticle of the Sun from Saint Francis of Assisi's Laudato Si', the encyclical of Pope Francis. A gold-toned tau cross rises prominently in the centre-left field, intertwined with abstract natural forms including olive branches and hands, rendered in a modern artistic style against a divided background of silver and darkened fields. To the right, an illuminated-manuscript panel bears the opening words of the Canticle in medieval Umbrian Italian. The denomination 5 euro appears in the lower left, the Rome mint mark R is visible in the lower centre, and the legend CITTÀ DEL VATICANO arcs along the upper border, with ANIMA MUNDI inscribed along the lower border.
