Obverse description The nine heraldic shields of the Austrian federal provinces are arranged in a circular pattern around the large numeral '5' denoting the face value, with the legend 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' and '5 · EURO ·' completing the inscription. The composition draws direct artistic inspiration from the classic Austrian 50 Schilling coinage series. The shields are rendered in fine detail within the nonagonal flan, each representing one of Austria's nine provinces. The overall design by engraver Helmut Andexlinger presents a balanced and heraldically precise arrangement within the coin's field.
