Reverse description The reverse features a detailed depiction of the historic Kärntnertor Theater (Carinthian Gate Theater), the Vienna venue demolished in 1870, where Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the celebrated 'Ode to Joy' received its world premiere in 1824. The opening bars of the 'Ode to Joy' melody are inscribed as a musical notation motif within the design, accompanied by a cameo portrait bust of Beethoven. The surrounding legend references Beethoven, Vienna, the date of the premiere, the European Hymn, and the coin's issue year. Engraver Herbert Wähner has rendered the architectural subject with precise period detail within the nonagonal field.
