Part of the Austrian Mint's long-running "Faszination Kunstgeschichte" series celebrating masterworks in the Kunsthistorisches Museum's collection, this issue commemorates Albrecht Dürer's 1502 watercolor and gouache study, held in the museum's Albertina graphic collection. The piece was revolutionary for its time — a serious naturalistic study of an animal rendered with scientific precision, predating the broader Northern European shift toward empirical observation by decades.
Copper €5 pieces in this series circulate at face value but are primarily sold directly by the mint as collectibles, meaning genuine circulation examples are essentially nonexistent.
