Amathous was one of the most resilient of Cyprus's ancient city-kingdoms, persisting through Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, and finally Ptolemaic dominance before being formally abolished as a political entity around 312 BC. Unlike most Cypriot kingdoms, it maintained a notably conservative minting tradition, and its diobols — small fractional silver coins — circulated during a period when the island's city-kingdoms were gradually being absorbed into Hellenistic administrative structures.
Cyprus has issued a substantial commemorative series honoring its ancient coinage types, with this piece among the more numismatically specific entries, referencing an actual denomination and issuing authority rather than a generic "ancient coin" theme.
