The Church of St. Lawrence in Vantaa is Finland's oldest surviving stone church, with sections of the nave dating to the late 15th century. Finland's Nordic-Baltic collector coin program has leaned heavily on ecclesiastical architecture — this issue fits a deliberate pattern of regional heritage subjects that the Mint of Finland pursued aggressively through the 2010s to sustain collector demand for the €5 bimetallic format after its novelty had worn off.
Mintage for the series was tightly controlled. The Vantaa church itself survived the Russian-Swedish conflicts that leveled much of the surrounding region during the Great Northern War.
