Blake and Mortimer debuted in 1946 in the first issue of Tintin magazine, the creation of Belgian cartoonist Edgar P. Jacobs, who spent years as a visual collaborator with Hergé before striking out independently. The series became one of the foundational works of the Franco-Belgian comics tradition, and Belgium has periodically issued collector coinage tied to its homegrown graphic novel heritage — a category the Royal Belgian Mint has developed more systematically than virtually any other European issuer.
These five-euro copper-nickel pieces circulate as legal tender but are produced for the collector market, issued under legislation permitting commemorative denominations outside the standard euro coinage program.
