The Bisontins were a series of local complementary currencies issued by cooperative credit institutions in the Franche-Comté region during the late 1990s, functioning as a regional exchange medium accepted by participating merchants in the Doubs department. They were never legal tender and carried no obligation on the Banque de France. Hugo was born in Besançon in 1802, making him the obvious local figurehead for this denomination — a choice that required no creative debate.
Imedia Europe 2 was a Besançon-based print house, so the note was conceived, printed, and intended to circulate entirely within a few kilometers of its own production.
