Issued to mark the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Amsterdam's canal ring, which received that designation in 2010 after a campaign stretching back decades. The grachtengordel — the 17th-century semicircular belt of canals engineered during the Dutch Golden Age — was nominated not merely for its engineering but for the urban planning principles it embodied, influencing city design across Europe and the colonial world.
The Netherlands issued this as a circulation-quality commemorative at face value, meaning many entered general use rather than collector hands.
