Reverse description At the centre of the reverse, a circular polychrome porcelain insert depicts the mythological scene of Midas's Judgement, showing King Midas seated between Pan playing pipes at left and Apollo holding a lyre at right, set against a pastoral landscape with architectural elements in the background, rendered in the style of Renaissance majolica pottery. The insert is framed by a gilt circular border. The surrounding silver field is elaborately engraved with dense, symmetrical acanthus-leaf and floral scrollwork in a Renaissance revival style, with the upper half set against a blackened background to create a dramatic two-tone contrast with the polished lower half.
