Antonio Onofri was the San Marinese statesman who, in 1797, personally persuaded Napoleon to spare the republic's independence during the French general's Italian campaign — an extraordinary piece of diplomatic maneuvering that kept San Marino sovereign when virtually every neighboring state was being reorganized or absorbed. Napoleon reportedly offered to expand San Marino's territory as a gesture of goodwill; Onofri declined, calculating that a larger border meant a larger target.
