Beschrijving keerzijde A circular polychrome porcelain insert occupies the centre of the reverse, reproducing a Renaissance-style scene of the Adoration of the Shepherds: the Virgin Mary kneels before the Christ Child in a manger, flanked by shepherds and attended by an ox, while angelic figures appear amid clouds above and a pastoral landscape with ruins extends into the background. The surrounding silver field is elaborately engraved with dense, intertwining acanthus scrollwork and floral rosettes in high relief, with the upper-left quadrant rendered against a dark oxidised background to create a striking two-tone contrast. The design is contained within a plain raised rim.

Aanvullende informatie

Malta's tradition of presepe — the elaborate Nativity tableau — runs deeper than almost anywhere else in Catholic Europe, sustained by parish rivalries and guild craftsmen going back centuries. This coin draws on that tradition rather than any single artwork. The porcelain insert is produced in conjunction with local ceramicists, a pairing the Central Bank has used selectively since the mid-2010s to distinguish its numismatic program from the broader eurozone collector market.
