The FAI World Air Games debuted in Turkey in 1997 — the first edition of what the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale intended as an Olympic-style multidiscipline aviation competition. Skysurfing, the discipline highlighted on this coin, had emerged from the French freefalling scene in the late 1980s and reached peak mainstream visibility around the mid-1990s largely through ESPN X Games coverage. Finland's decision to commemorate the event was unusual given no particular Finnish connection to the host city of Ankara.
The bimetallic format was relatively novel for Finnish commemorative issues at the time. The X# prefix in standard references flags it as a non-circulating local issue outside the mainstream catalog.
