Obverse description Central motif depicts a praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) in profile, rendered in fine detail against a plain field. The inscription ESSAI - PATTERN - PROBE arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 2006 situated in the lower field beneath the insect. The design reflects the standard essai/pattern format used for proposed Croatian euro coinage, with the legend presented in three languages denoting its trial piece status.

Additional information

Croatia's euro-candidate coinage was produced speculatively ahead of the country's anticipated eurozone entry, which at the time of this issue was optimistically projected for the early 2010s. Accession was repeatedly delayed — Croatia ultimately joined the EU in 2013 but didn't adopt the euro until January 2023, nearly two decades after these pattern pieces were first struck.

The Mandić reference places this among the later die variants of the HR-EP4 type.
