| Obverse description | A perspective view of the historic Palazzo degli Studi, the main seat of the Federico II University of Naples, occupies the central field, framed within a decorative border inspired by the tympanum of the building's principal façade. The arch-shaped legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA curves above and below the design. The designer's name U. PERNAZZA appears in the right field. |

| Additional information |
The University of Naples Federico II, founded in 1224 by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, holds the distinction of being the oldest state-supported university in the world — established explicitly without papal authorization, a deliberate political act in Frederick's ongoing conflict with Rome. Italy has issued a recurring series of commemorative five-euro pieces honoring historic Italian universities, and this entry belongs to that program.
Federico II himself mandated attendance, prohibiting Sicilian students from studying abroad to keep intellectual talent within his kingdom.
