Obverse description At center, a representation of the first Greek drachma coin issued in 1832 is displayed within a wreath formed by two olive branches, rendered in high relief against a polished field. The wreath frames the central motif symmetrically, with the date inscriptions flanking the design. The legends in the outer field record the dual commemorative dates and the denomination of the depicted historical coin.

Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence, this coin is notably self-referential — its trimetallic construction incorporates a plastic ring printed with imagery evoking the drachma, the currency Greece used for nearly three millennia before adopting the euro in 2002. The drachma's discontinuation remained politically contentious long after accession, and the 2010–2015 debt crisis briefly made "Grexit" and a drachma revival genuine policy discussions at the highest levels of the EU.

The plastic insert component is a relatively rare constructional choice in world coinage, deployed here partly as an anti-counterfeiting measure.
