Latvia began issuing collector-grade silver commemoratives in small themed series after re-establishing its mint operations following independence, and marriage-themed issues have appeared across multiple Baltic states as gift-market pieces rather than circulation strikes. This one was produced specifically as a keepsake coin, the "JĀ" inscription being the Latvian word for "yes" — the affirmative spoken at a wedding ceremony.
The gold-plated elements were applied post-striking, a finish technique the Latvian mint has used across several of its premium five-euro issues to differentiate gift-market pieces from standard commemoratives.
