Benito Jacovitti died in 1997, but his anarchic comic-strip cowboy Cocco Bill — first published in Il Vittorioso in 1957 — has remained a fixture of Italian popular culture long enough to earn a mint issue more than six decades after his debut. This coin is part of IPZS's ongoing series celebrating Italian comics and illustration, a program that has increasingly leaned into mid-century satirical art as a legitimate subject for commemorative coinage.
Jacovitti's work was notorious for its visual density and absurdist violence, and his relationship with Catholic youth press made his eventual canonization in metal a mildly ironic outcome.
