Willem-Alexander's effigy replaced that of his mother Beatrix on Dutch coinage following her abdication on April 30, 2013 — Koninginnedag, the very holiday that had celebrated the monarchy for decades, subsequently renamed Koningsdag. The transition required new master dies for the entire circulation series, with the Willem-Alexander types entering production the following year.
