Obverse description Left-facing effigy of King Albert II, engraved by Jan Alfons Keustermans, occupies the central field; this portrait corresponds to the design originally introduced on the 1999–2007 series, reinstated from 2009 onward following a brief modification in 2008 that was found to conflict with ECOFIN Council recommendations. Encircling the effigy are the twelve stars of the European Union, with the national identifier 'BE' for Belgium and the royal monogram — the letter A surmounted by the numeral II beneath a crown — positioned between two of the stars. The mint year appears within the design, and the composition reflects the standard Belgian euro cent obverse format.

Additional information

Belgium's euro coinage went through a mandatory portrait update in 2008 after EU guidelines pushed member states to refresh royal effigies periodically. Albert II had already appeared on Belgian euro cents since the series launched in 1999; this revision adjusted the portrait while retaining the same basic compositional approach. The update was largely administrative rather than driven by any particular political moment — a bureaucratic refresh rather than a reign change.

Albert abdicated in July 2013, ending this type's production run and triggering yet another portrait changeover for the Philippe series.
