Obverse description The obverse depicts the small coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia centered in the inner field, comprising a quartered shield with a rising sun, a lion, and a griffin. The country name LATVIJA appears as a legend beneath the arms, with the year of issue positioned to the left. The design was executed by engraver Jānis Strupulis. The outer ring, characteristic of all euro coinage, is adorned with the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle.
