Estonia adopted the euro on 1 January 2011, becoming the first former Soviet republic to do so. The accession date was politically deliberate — Estonian officials had pushed hard against European skepticism about their fiscal readiness, ultimately qualifying by running one of the tightest budget deficits in the EU during the 2008–2009 financial crisis that had destabilized far larger eurozone candidates.
