Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008 after the Maltese lira was fixed at an irrevocable conversion rate of 0.4293 lira to the euro — a peg set by EU Council decision in July 2007. The lira, which had circulated since 1972, was demonetized within weeks. These first euro cent issues therefore mark an unusually abrupt monetary transition for a country that had maintained one of the more stable pound-based currencies in the Mediterranean.
