| Obverse description | The obverse depicts the west façade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, a masterwork of Romanesque architecture and one of the foremost pilgrimage destinations in Christendom, rendered in fine relief at the center of the field. Encircling the central motif is the legend ESPAÑA, identifying the issuing nation, accompanied by the mint mark and the year of issue. The design is framed by a ring of twelve stars representing the member states of the European Union, five of which are linked by a band, a distinctive feature of the Spanish euro coinage series. The composition reflects Spain's cultural and religious heritage, with the cathedral serving as the national motif chosen for the lower-denomination euro coins. |
